Think twice before buying a living Christmas tree. Not that the practice isn't well-intentioned. It is. You're buying a tree that can last a lifetime - bringing beauty to the landscape, soaking up carbon dioxide, producing oxygen and creating a habitat for birds and wildlife.
Problem is, caring for a living tree is hard work.
Too many people buy the trees, lug them into the house and let the needles dry out. That weakens the tree at transplanting time - when it needs all its strength to survive.
Planting is tough, too. By late December the ground is often frozen, which makes digging a pain. And watering is difficult because hoses are stored ...
