For a second, Gary Lumpkin's shoulders sag as a pass ricochets off a defender out of bounds. For a second, his head shakes in disbelief as an easy shot bounces off the rim.

A player's confidence can waver over the course of a season, and now Xavier University's Lumpkin is coping with low confidence.

''He has a high standard for himself,'' said XU coach Skip Prosser. ''Sometimes when things don't go the way he'd like them to go, he thinks it's Armageddon. He has to understand that he's going to go through some ups and downs.''
