Karl Childers came spilling out of Billy Bob Thornton's subconscious one hot day in the desert more than a decade ago, when he was struggling with an over-controlling director and a bit part in a TV movie.

Thornton was mad at himself, and at the world, and during a lunch break he sat in an air-conditioned trailer and made ugly faces in the mirror and began talking like a killer - a man who had slaughtered his adulterous mother and her lover with a scythe called a ''sling blade.''

''It just came right out of me, the monologue at the beginning of the film,'' Thornton recalled.
