BORN TO WIN: Horses born outside Kentucky don't stand much chance of winning the Kentucky Derby. Of the 122 winners, 92 were born in the Bluegrass State, including '96 winner Grindstone, with Florida next at five and Virginia third with four. Three of the past seven winners were out-of-staters - Unbridled in '90, Lil E. Tee in '92 and Sea Hero in '93.
BRED TO WIN: Calumet Farm has produced the most Kentucky Derby winners (nine). They were Whirlaway (1941), Pensive (1944), Citation (1948), Ponder (1949), Hill Gail (1952), Iron Liege (1957), Tim Tam (1958), Forward Pass (1968) and Strike ...
