Sure, the film won nine Oscars, but have you read Michael Ondaatje's ''The English Patient''? What about the book featured in the story - ''The Histories,'' by the father of historical writing, Herodotus? Thought not.
Thursday, Ondaatje's publisher, Knopf, is releasing a new edition of Herodotus' ancient history in its Everyman's Library of world classics ($23). The jacket will bear pictographs reminiscent of those in the film's Cave of Swimmers scene.
