Takeovers of not-for-profit hospitals in New Jersey will soon require the scrutiny of public hearings and a review by state executives. Gov. Christine Todd Whitman signed the Community Health Care Assets Protection Act into law in November after the state Senate approved the measure with the governor's final modifications.
For hospitals, the changes are expected to equalize competitive conditions for not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals, both of which are seeking acquisitions in New Jersey in the broad trend toward consolidation in the health care industry.
