A huge operation has been underway for ten years to produce and transport rock boulders for the foundations of the 500 km-long Kara Deniz highway, under construction from Hopa on the Georgian border, along Turkey's Black Sea coast, to Samsun. Lack of space on the narrow coastal strip means the highway is being built predominantly on ground reclaimed from the sea. Some tunnels are necessary, however, and these are being constructed in advance so that the spoil may be used for topping off the sea bunds.
