Construction of the five main sections of the 57km-long Saint Gotthard AlpTransit rail tunnel project for the Swiss national rail corporation SBB, is scheduled to start in mid-late 2001. Tenders for the main tunnel contracts have been invited, proposals for the first lots are due back by the end of 2000, and first contracts are expected to be awarded in mid-2001.
In the meantime, several significant tunnel contracts are underway to prepare each access point and install the necessary infrastructure ready for speedy mobilisation of the main tunnel works.
