America's Dairyland is in trouble.
At least the 19,500 Wisconsin dairy farmers are in deep difficulty as they face a bleak winter and spring watching their income taking a deep dive.
The realization of serious trouble on America's dairy farms was truly brought home Dec. 1 when the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a basic cheese-milk price for November milk of $8.57 per hundredweight of milk, at 3.5 percent butterfat.
One must go back nearly 24 years to March 1977 to find a cheese-milk price lower than the announced $8.57. That figure is a decline of $1.45 per hundredweight from the $10.02 of October, $1.22 below the $9.77 a year ago and ...
