The two "children" who protected Midwest residents the past three winters have gone away, leaving a chilly outlook in their absence.
Despite the double dose Monday of extreme cold and heavy snow, the outlook for this winter is for normal temperatures and snowfall at best. But without the influence of El Nino and La Nina, Spanish for the male and female gender of child, the status quo will seem a lot worse.
"The odds of having a fourth mild winter are pretty slim," said State Climatologist Jim Angel. "Even if we have a normal winter, it'll be kind of rough."
