With a gracious concession by Al Gore, George W. Bush finally claimed the presidency of the United States on Wednesday, ending an unprecedented post-election fight for the nation's highest office with a pledge to "put politics behind us."
"Republicans want the best for the nation, and so do Democrats," Bush said from the podium of the Texas House chamber in Austin. "Our nation must rise above a house divided."
In an address that was a far cry from the victory celebration he had counted on 36 days earlier, Bush said bipartisanship would be his goal.
