Dec. 13--Traditional software companies are emerging as the "brightest stars" in the Puget Sound area's high-tech economy, even as once-booming dot.com companies shrink or disappear, a University of Washington economist told Pierce County business leaders Tuesday.
Paul Sommers, senior research fellow at the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Affairs, said job growth among Puget Sound's hundreds of software companies is expected to be 15 percent to 18 percent in 2001.
That growth is expected to more than absorb the layoffs among ailing Internet companies.
