"Residents have the right to privacy, confidentiality and dignity as well as many other rights," says Diane Menio, executive director of the Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly, Philadelphia. "However, it is a big challenge to protect these rights in an institutional setting."
Medical ethicist Terry Perlin, Ph.D., agrees that the challenge exists and even questions whether pure privacy and confidentiality truly can exist in nursing homes.
