Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas, hobbles toward the February inauguration of president-elect Jean-Bertrand Aristide with its international relations and desperately needed overseas aid on shaky ground, said opposition leaders and Government officials, reports CANA-Reuters (December 6, 2000):
Voters in the Caribbean nation of 7.8 million people on November 26 elected Aristide to the presidency by an overwhelming margin in a national election boycotted by the opposition and shunned by Haiti's traditional international allies because of tainted parliamentary elections held in May;
