Article: Multi-Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Strains Transmitted in Kenyan Refugee Camps.

2000 DEC 19 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Sonia Bell-Nichols, staff medical writer -- A surveillance study of tuberculosis among refugees in three camps in Kenya has found that drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis are being transmitted among individuals in those camps.

This finding points out the urgency in shoring up programs designed to control tuberculosis among encamped refugees, according to medical researchers at the Kenya Medical Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya.

Strains of tuberculosis in refugees in three camps were compared with tuberculosis strains in non-refugees at a treatment center also located in Kenya.
