LOS ANGELES _ USC made the PC choice, not the popular one.
After setting out to hire a proven winner but being turned down or ignored by high-profile candidates, USC finally settled on former NFL coach Pete Carroll as its new football coach Friday despite strong objections from boosters, alumni and fans.
But Carroll, 49, who signed a five-year contract for approximately $6 million to replace Paul Hackett, said he was eager to prove USC president Steven B. Sample and Trojans athletic director Mike Garrett were right to hire him. And he said he knew why he was the best choice for the job, even if he was not the first choice.
