Dr. Ruth J. Simmons has been appointed the 18th president of Brown University in Providence, RI. Simmons will assume the post on July 1, 2001, becoming the first Black to head an Ivy League school.
Currently president of Smith College in Northampton, MA, Simmons will succeed Gordon Gee who resigned earlier this year. The institution had been seeking a leader since February.
Brown has 7,000 students and endowment of $1.5 billion--one of the smallest endowments of the Ivy League schools. Simmons said that might be too small to accomplish what she wants there.
