UK's Granada Media has agreed to sell its HTV independent television franchise for Wales and the West of England to Carlton Communications in exchange for Carlton's 20 per cent stake in Southern England ITV franchise Meridian plus [pound]185.5m cash. Deal will leave Granada with 100 per cent of Meridian and satisfy regulators who insisted that Granada hive off some of the franchises it acquired during a [pound]1.75bn purchase of broadcast assets of United News & Media (UNM) earlier this year (see 2000/229b1).
Buy will leave Granada with a combined viewing share for its five franchises of 14.4 per cent--below 15 per cent maximum set by Independent Television ...
