HOT SPRINGS, Ark. _ On a glorious fall afternoon, visitors climb the steps and file into the front door of the historic Hot Springs High School. It's not a pretty sight.
The blue paint is peeling from the cinder-block walls. Plaster is crumbling from the ceiling.
But a little farther down the hallway, the scene changes abruptly. Oil paintings and acrylics from local galleries line walls freshly painted in gray and white.
Inside the classrooms, blackboards still hang in place, as if waiting for a fresh set of algebra problems. But the rooms now also contain stoves and refrigerators, kitchen cabinets, closets, tubs, toilets and showers.
