What the editors of this volume have in common is that they all worked for a number of years together at the University of Dusseldorf, which has one of the most active linguistics departments in Germany, headed by Dieter Wunderlich. Four of the fourteen essays in this collection come from this background (R. Fabri, A. Ortmann, T. Parodi, and B. Gerlach), while the ten others are by authors working in Germany (I. Zimmermann, H.
