The relationship between cities and newspapers is important because newspapers historically have been among the most cohesive elements in a community. Studies in the 1940s and 1950s suggested a strong relationship between civic-minded individuals and newspaper use. Scholars concluded that the greater people's connection to their community, the greater their newspaper use.(1)
