AMSTELVEEN, Netherlands-Perhaps the last available billion-dollar, full-line dairy operation in the United States was put up for sale last month by its Dutch parent. Crowley Foods and Marigold Foods, together the dairy businesses of Wessanen USA, were put on the market as parent Koninklijke Wessanen NV focuses on health foods worldwide.
Combined, Minneapolis-based Marigold and Crowley, of Binghamton, N.Y., have $1 billion in sales. The two will be marketed both individually and together, according to officials. Also up for sale is Leerdammer Co., a leading marketer of branded cheese products in Europe, and the only other Wessanen property involved in dairy.
