American sign language teachers at La Follette High School tell their students they will be able to put their language skills to practical use, but Jacki Hood never guessed it would help take the sting out of racist taunts.

The African-American high school senior said that while she was working as a waitress at an International House of Pancakes, a table of customers began to insult her, saying something to the effect that blacks just aren't smart enough.
