WASHINGTON - Even as President-elect George W. Bush prepares for his inauguration, Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) is flexing his fund-raising muscle with an eye toward his re-election - and a potential 2004 White House bid.

Kerry hauled in an eye-popping $400,000 at two big-money events in Boston and New York over the past two weeks, boosting his fund-raising total since 1997 to $5 million.

The back-to-back six-figure events, on the heels of the protracted 2000 White House race, has sparked a flurry of speculation in national Democratic Party circles that Kerry is already laying the groundwork for a possible presidential bid.
