On 22 December 1998, the European Commission adopted Regulation 2815/98 concerning notably the designation of origin of extra virgin olive oil and virgin olive oil benefiting neither from a protected designation of origin nor from a protected geographic indication. In the case of virgin olive oils from a Member State or the European Community, the product label can, by virtue of this Regulation, indicate the origin of the olive oil.
