Dec. 19--ANTONITO, Colo.--A Colorado Wildlife commissioner and New Mexico state game commissioner have stepped over political boundaries and are working together for wildlife.
Commissioner Olive Valdez, a rancher just south of Antonito, and New Mexico Commissioner Steve Padilla have fused a camaraderie over an elk herd that migrates between Colorado and New Mexico.
In August, the New Mexico Game Commission authorized the issuance of 60,000 elk hunting permits for the 2001-2002 season -- 20,000 more than the state's Department of Game and Fish recommended.
