Article: Car Accidents Cost 8.1 Tril. Won Last Year.

Car accidents in Korea last year cost 8.1 trillion won, an amount equal to ten percent of the nation's yearly budget.

A total of 9,353 people died and 402,967 were injured from a total of 275,000 car accidents in 1999. The death toll was equivalent to an army division.

That means one person becomes a car accident casualty every one minute and 16 seconds, causing an average of 11.64 million won loss.

According to the Road Traffic Safety Authority yesterday, the car accidents recorded 4.8 trillion won in human damages, the largest share of the total losses including property damages, which were estimated at 2.62 trillion won.
