VIRGINIANS ENDURED the Great Depression like the rest of the United States, but the experience was slightly eased by the Old Dominion's bounty of small family farms and its lack of big manufacturing industries that could go under and put thousands out of work.
The state's major crop, cigarette tobacco, declined only slightly in price and production during the 1930s, with cash-short smokers simply switching to cheaper brands or rolling their own.
