Until Vietnam, the War of 1812 was the most unpopular and most derisive war the United States ever fought.
Calling for ``Free Trade and Sailor's Rights,'' a reluctant Congress passed a declaration of war June 18, 1812 by narrow margins - 79 to 49 in the House and 19 to 13 in the Senate. Cities that had trade relations with Great Britain and New England feared sharp fighting along the Canadian border and were reluctant to go to war at all.
