NAGS HEAD -- The temperature was already in the 90s as the competitors prepared for their 10 a.m. race Saturday. Forecasters said the vicious, dull sun that burned slowly through a hazy sky might bring triple digits by day's end.
The racers moved slowly, withdrawn and silent, as final preparations were made on the track across the street.
Race coordinator Susie Stoutenburg voiced some concern at 9:30 a.m.
``I think it's way too hot to have a race today,'' she admitted as she stood in the cool air conditioning beside the resting competitors in their numbered bright and iridescent shells.
