Ask allergists about the legacy of Hurricane Floyd, and they'll tell you about mold. Mold creeping up flood-soaked walls, embedding itself in waterlogged carpets, nesting deep inside bloated beams of wood.

As people return to their homes in flooded areas of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, many of them will be sneezing, coughing and wheezing.

``Warm temperatures and damp conditions - we've got the perfect formula for mold,'' said Dr. Paul Mehlhop, an allergist at East Carolina University Medical School in Greenville, where Floyd left severe flooding in its wake.
