Following the end of the Spanish-American War, nothing stirred up a commotion like the arrival of the captured flagship of Spain's Cuban Naval force, Reina Mercedes, on May 27, 1899.
Hundreds of shipyarders and curiosity seekers alike turned out along the Elizabeth River to view the battered hulk that served as command ship for Spain's Admiral D. Pascual Cervera while he defended the harbor of Santiago de Cuba against the likes of the Portsmouth-built battleship U.S.S. Texas.
