UNITED WAY ORGANIZERS AND DONORS CELEBRATE SUCCESS OF '99 CAMPAIGN.(LOCAL)

NORFOLK -- Ending the most successful fund-raising campaign in its history, the United Way announced Thursday that it has exceeded its goal of netting a record $16.5 million for local charities.

The grand total - $16,827,546 - was announced at the Chrysler Museum of Art, where United Way volunteers, campaign coordinators and donors gathered for a Victory Celebration.

``It's just inspirational,'' said Mike Hughes, president of the United Way. ``This has just been an exceptional year for the United Way.''
