JACK GERMOND is among the last of a dying breed - solid, shoe-leather reporters who pride themselves on wearing no blinders, cultivating the contacts and getting the story - first. Since the late 1960s he's been at the top of his profession - a Washington political reporter, one of the original boys on the bus.
Germond's career path also reflects those bygone days: apprenticeship on a couple Midwestern dailies, covering the city of Rochester for the Gannett chain's then-flagship hometown paper, next the Statehouse, finally Washington.
