IF YOU KEEP abreast of the news, you may have noticed how often the topic of chickens crops up. The headlines give food for thought and may ruffle some feathers.
Consider the chicken, existing wing to shoulder with mankind for at least 4,000 years. These birds, domesticated from the Indian wild red jungle fowl, were often kept by past cultures only for their eggs.
To eat a chicken used to be a luxury. ``A chicken in every pot'' was an extravagant promise when uttered by King Henry IV of France in the 16th century, and it still was when the Republican Party used the same phrase during the 1932 election.
