Blue-eyed Dickie Austin helped set the scene. Before stepping foot into the Sandy Bay Art Gallery in Hatteras Village, I'd been sitting with the native son peeling pink shrimp and listening to his tales of folks now gone. Lulled, I stepped outside for air to roam down a finger dock. Clumps of blue mussels clung to sodden reeds lining the bank. Delicate marsh mallows nodded violet heads as puffs of air filtered through them.
Sunday silenced summer traffic. A black and white cat hiding nearby made the only sound as it scampered, surprised. Balmy breezes blew off the creek. A slender egret stepped away.
It was time to discover what was new at the village ...
