FROM APPLES DIPPED in honey to symbolize hope for a sweet New Year to bread thrown on water to cast away bad habits and sins, food plays an integral role in the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana, which begins Friday.
From sundown Friday to dusk Sunday, Jews will attend synagogue, gather with friends and family and, of course, eat.
The holiday marks the beginning of the agricultural year, according to ancient tradition in the Middle East. As tokens of the wish for a plentiful harvest, vegetables and fruits play an important role on the Jewish New Year table, says cookbook author Faye Levy.
