Bethlehem Steel Corp. has announced plans to build a huge intermodal rail terminal in Bethlehem, Pa., on the site of its historic, but now closed, iron and steel plant for use by Norfolk Southern Corp.
``It's a very important piece of our strategy in the Northeast because, No. 1, it's within 60 miles of Newark, (N.J.),'' said Thomas L. Finkbiner, Norfolk Southern's vice president-intermodal.
Intermodal refers to the shipment of truck trailers and shipping containers by rail. The terminal will act as a transfer point for switching between rail cars and trucks.
