In the beginning. . .
OUR MILLENNIUM dawned about midway through a period of time that Western historians have labeled the Middle Ages. The era is a bridge between the sophistication of classical antiquity and the culture of modern times. Sometimes, too, it is called the Dark Ages, again a Western-world perspective.
In fact, only the western half of the old Greco-Roman world basically Western Europe, the cradle of what we today call Western civilization was dark. Dark, as in poor, backward, sometimes barbarous and politically fragmented.
