GROWING UP IN the Midwest, we often sang a little ditty in the early spring that went something like this: ``Cherries are ripe, cherries are ripe, the robin sang one morning.'' Anyone with a cherry tree knew they had to get up early to beat the robins to the cherries.
Cherries won't ripen for a few more weeks, but this is the month we celebrate President's Day and commemorate the birthday of George Washington, our first president.
