THREE WORLD WAR II movies will battle it out against two set in the Elizabethan era for this year's best-picture Oscar.
The two time periods dominated the Academy Award nominees, announced Tuesday before dawn on the West Coast. Surprisingly, ``Shakespeare in Love,'' with 13 nominations, topped the early favorite, ``Saving Private Ryan,'' in the final tally. ``Shakespeare,'' if fact, fell just one short of matching the all-time number of nominations - held, at 14, by ``All About Eve'' and ``Titanic.''
Also nominated for best picture were ``Elizabeth,'' ``The Thin Red Line'' and ``Life Is Beautiful.''
