THE SPAN of Our Millennium that we examine this month, 1776-1865, is one of the most remarkable and memorable periods in the history of the Western World, one in which the first modern republic is established, one in which occurred many of the defining events of the American character.
Consider all that happened in the four score and nine years between the time ``our forefathers set forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal'' and the time when we concluded a great Civil War that made liberty and equality more nearly available to all people.
