CURIOUS THING about this brief span of time in Our Millennium between the Civil War and the dawn of the 20th century: we largely ignore it. Mostly we tend to skip over it entirely and barrel right on to World War I, although occasionally we pause briefly at the Spanish-American War.
Looking for the ``action,'' I suppose.
Oh, but the things we overlook in doing so. What a remarkable 35 years this was.
