The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the cities of Portsmouth and Virginia Beach planning grants to explore and prepare for the creation of drug courts.
The federal grants move the two cities closer to joining Norfolk and six other communities in Virginia that now have drug courts.
Portsmouth received $18,840 and Virginia Beach received $27,660, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The two South Hampton Roads cities, Newport News and Chesterfield County were the only Virginia communities to receive grants.
