WASHINGTON -- Faced with a mountainous terrain and the threat of shoulder-fired missiles, the Army's Apache helicopters have yet to join the battle in the skies over Yugoslavia. President Clinton now suggests they won't.
During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, the Army's Apache helicopters were technological stars that used a potent arsenal of missiles, rockets and cannons to destroy hundreds of Iraqi tanks with speed and precision.
But the gunships have gotten off to an inauspicious start in the Kosovo conflict. Two of the vaunted attack helicopters have crashed and two crew members have been killed since 24 of the choppers ...
