BUXTON, N.C. -- Exuberant as new fathers, contractors celebrated along with hundreds of sodden spectators Thursday as the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse traveled the first inches of its half-mile journey away from the eroding shoreline.
Project manager Joe Jakubik enthusiastically thrust both thumbs up toward the balcony of the 208-foot brick beacon, where the former and current superintendents of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore stood, as the lighthouse quietly started its move at about 3 p.m.
