It may be that Nags Head has always owed its identity to the wind and water. The name may have been a remembrance of a similar place on England's coast.
Or it may have been a clever map maker's statement about the questionable behavior of locals who lured ships looking for safe harbor to ruin with bobbing lanterns strung around the heads of old horses (or nags).
Whatever the name's origin, the first recorded use of Nags Head on the Outer Banks dates to the 1730s.
Although there were earlier permanent settlements at Colington and Roanoke Island, it was Nags Head that became the barrier island's first summer resort. ...
