Ask people beyond Virginia if they have heard of ``Hampton Roads'' and the odds are that they haven't the foggiest idea what it is, much less where it is.
Should we conclude that identifying Southeastern Virginia as ``Hampton Roads'' dooms the region to obscurity?
No.
Let's concede that, as retired advertising executive J. Daniel Ballard says, ``Norfolk,'' ``Virginia Beach'' and ``Williamsburg'' are the region's brand names, recognized far and wide. Let's concede also that Norfolk is best known primarily because of the U.S. Navy's long connection with it.
But Greater Norfolk is not a name that any ...
