Whose business is it, anyway?
In a democracy - where citizens are expected to make decisions that determine the course of government - it's essential they have the information they need to decide wisely.
That's why Virginia law gives every citizen the right to obtain state and local government information and to attend meetings where public business is being considered.
Virginia's Freedom of Information Act says citizens can inspect records and attend meetings of any state body and its political subdivisions - such as city and county governments - unless there's a good reason why they shouldn't.
