IT'S 109,00 ACRES of cypress, bears and financial opportunities.
That's how managers of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge see it. Not that they want to auction off trees and animals to the highest bidder; instead, they want to tap into the growing international popularity of eco-tourism.
The refuge's primary mission is protection of the forested wetlands that span portions of Chesapeake, Suffolk and North Carolina. But more visitors would mean more money for tour operators, local governments and the refuge itself, desperate for funds to improve its grounds.
